Areas of practice
Matters are taken on where the chambers can genuinely be useful. Where they cannot, you will be told so at the first meeting rather than after a retainer.
Civil
Disputes over what belongs to whom, what was agreed, and what is owed.
Property and title
Suits for declaration and possession, partition between co-owners, disputes over sale deeds and agreements to sell, and injunctions to restrain a threatened dispossession or an unauthorised construction.
Recovery and contract
Recovery of money due under contracts, invoices or loans; suits on breach; and summary proceedings where the claim is on a written instrument.
Landlord and tenant
Eviction and rent-control proceedings, arrears of rent, and disputes arising from lease and licence agreements.
Execution and appeals
Enforcing a decree once obtained, resisting execution where it is misconceived, and appellate and revisional work arising from civil proceedings.
Criminal
Where liberty is at stake, the first days matter more than any later hearing.
Bail and anticipatory bail
Applications before the Magistrate, Sessions Court and High Court, including anticipatory bail where arrest is apprehended but has not yet taken place.
FIRs, complaints and quashing
Assistance in the registration of a complaint, responding to an FIR, and petitions to quash proceedings that are an abuse of process or disclose no offence.
Cheque dishonour
Prosecution and defence of proceedings arising from dishonoured cheques, including the statutory notice stage where the matter is frequently won or lost.
Trial and appeal
Conduct of criminal trials, cross-examination, and appeals and revisions against conviction or sentence.
Family
Matters that are rarely only legal, and are handled with that in mind.
Divorce and separation
Petitions on contested and mutual-consent grounds, judicial separation, and negotiated settlements where both sides want the matter closed.
Maintenance and custody
Maintenance for a spouse or child, custody and visitation, and guardianship applications.
Domestic violence and cruelty
Proceedings for protection, residence and monetary relief, and defence where allegations are disputed.
Succession and inheritance
Succession certificates, probate and letters of administration, wills, and disputes among heirs over an estate.
Corporate & commercial
For businesses, most legal cost is incurred by things that were never written down properly.
Contracts
Drafting, review and negotiation of commercial agreements — supply, service, employment, leases, and settlement terms.
Commercial disputes
Recovery from customers and suppliers, disputes between partners or shareholders, and arbitration arising from a contractual clause.
Notices and regulatory correspondence
Drafting and replying to legal notices, and responding to correspondence from authorities before it becomes a proceeding.
Advice for new businesses
Founder arrangements, standard-form customer terms, and the routine documentation a young company needs before its first dispute rather than after it.
Not sure which of these your matter is?
Most people are not, and it does not matter. Describe what has happened and the chambers will tell you where it falls and what the next step is.
